For a couple of decades from the late-1960s through the 1980s the 7400 series of TTL ICs was the most widely used and best-known logic family.

Texas Instruments introduced the series in 1965 - albeit in it's mil-spec 5400 form. The initial series offering was 8 types: 7 basic gate combinations (5400,10,20,30,40,50,60) and one gated J-K flip-flop (5470).

These weren't the first TTL ICs, Sylvania had introduced some earlier; and there were other series from other manufacturers in the mid-late 1960s (e.g. Fairchild 9000 series). Somehow the 7400 series became the industry standard and everyone coalesced around or into 7400 compatibility and nomenclature.

Presented here is an extract from TI's 1965 Catalog which introduces the series ("NEW!"). The extracts are the digital and IC portions of the catalog, absent are the portions on individual transistors, diodes, etc. The physical catalog is standard 8.5" * 11" pages.
